Wizards Play Aggressive In Loss To Islanders

In the final match of the 2011/2012 season, the Topeka Rugby Football Club took on union newcomer, Independence Islanders in a very aggressive game on both sides of the ball.  In a game that would turn out to be another loss for the Wizards, it sparked confidence in a team that has been trying to find its way the past couple of seasons.  In a 63-16 final, the Wizards head into the off-season with a lot of work on offense and the continuation of tackling form in order to improve.

The Independence Islanders are a new club that is vying for a spot in the Heart of Midwest Union.  With that said, this was a team stacked with plenty of experience and demonstrated that they will be a force in the Heart.  Topeka knew they were in for a tough game and came out playing with nothing to lose.

Fast play is what the Islanders fed off of all afternoon as they were able to get the ball out of rucks and into their back line to create big overloads consistently.  They also ran the ball hard and had great support.  These factors led to them scoring plenty of trys.

Topeka actually played fairly well, but they couldn't match the speed and experience of the Islanders.  Overall, the Wizards came out with great energy and determination, but more work is needed to become better competition for teams like the Islanders.

Jon Cox gave TRFC plenty of lift with his boot as he kicked for 11 points on the day.   Late in the match, rookie Jake Hibbler scored his second try of the year with another one of his fantastic grubber kicks almost 40 meters for the score.  TFRC had their chances to score trys from time to time, but got bogged down inside the 10 by the Islanders defense on more than one occasion.  Ball movement will be the focus of the summer 7s and conditioning season.  The opportunities are there for the Wizards, the offensive firepower of the team has to step it up when those chances are there.

For the final match of the year, the team wanted to end on a better note, but didn't hang their heads in the loss.  The team understands where they are as a club at this point and are hungry make adjustments and to kick the conditioning up another couple of notches to start earning wins for the 2012/2013 season.

The Wizards will start summer 7s and looks forward to the 15s game against the British Military on June 20th at 7pm.  There is always rugby to be played.  Cheers until next season!

The British Military who will be conducting training at Fort Leavenworth this spring will once again honor Topeka Rugby with another match this June 20 at 7 pm in Topeka at McDonald Field.

This is becoming an yearly event that we look very forward to as a rugby club and we welcome our British allies with open arms for a friendly test match that will give our players an experience few teams can match.

Last year's tilt gave the British a  44-7 win.  Topeka plans on being improved and looks forward to play against a group of men who have lived with rugby their entire lives.  This is a game that TRFC has looked forward to all year and talks about all the time.

We will update more as the match approaches and we look forward to another high turnout from the fans as it was for last year's match.

Alumni Come Out And Show They Still Have Grit

The Topeka Rugby Football Club held their annual Alumni Game on May 5 and it was a fun match and a day that showed that experience has an edge over youth.

It was a hot and humid day and that did not tamper the level of intensity on the pitch.  The Alumni took it to the youngsters early and went up 19-0.  The alumni played as if they were a team in mid season form and it was a sight to see how well they worked together to put points up on the board.

Conditioning ultimately came into factor as the current TRFC came back and evened things up and closed out the match at 19-19.  The back line for the current squad got their game rolling and put together two great phases to put a couple trys on the board.  The packies were not left out as Josh Norton barreled in for a try of his own late in the game.

Ultimately this was a match for fun and everyone involved in the game had a great time.  It is always enjoyable being around this event seeing the alumni mingle with the Topeka squad.  A lot of laughs, handshakes and hugs were to be seen as this event will be one that is looked forward to every spring.

Congratulations to Larry "The Silver Fox" Cox for earning the "Man of the Match" for the alumni.

The alumni had members who took Topeka to the highest levels of rugby in the past and the current team can learn a lot from playing against them once a year.   If TRFC wants to return to that level of rugby, having the alumni be a part of that is integral to Topeka's future.
